Bonding with Your Dog: A Trainer’s Secrets for Building a Better Relationship

The human-canine bond: a relationship steeped in love with equal parts mutual respect, trust, and regard

In this groundbreaking book, professional dog trainer Victoria Schade reveals that a successful relationship between you and your dog isn’t about establishing yourself as the pack leader, but about building a meaningful bond. She explains how this bond forms the core of your entire relationship; if it’s lacking, it’s the primary source of any frustration you may be having with your dog.

First, you’ll take a quiz to help you gauge your current relationship with your dog. Next, you’ll learn the building blocks for creating a positive, mutually rewarding bond-from granting privileges to being unpredictable to offering ample praise and playtime. You’ll discover how a bonded dog:

  • Listens to obedience cues
  • Wants you in her sightlines, even in intriguing environments
  • Doesn’t escape through open doorways
  • Understands and follows your house rules
  • Wants to be close to you and work with you
  • Truly trusts and respects you

Whether you share your heart and home with a puppy, an adolescent, or a senior dog, it’s never too early or too late to build a bond to last a lifetime-and this book shows you how.

Although not strictly a dog “training” book, this book is hands down the most helpful dog training tool I’ve come across. Absolutely every dog owner should read it. It is really best described as couple’s therapy for you and your dog, and literally everything she advises you to do in this book just “feels” right. Her lessons truly resonate on a deeper emotional level than any other dog training books I’ve come across. I just convinced my mom to order a copy for herself, and if you’re reading this review I definitely advise you to buy a copy as well — you won’t regret it!

6 yrs ago, i decided to adopt an 8-yr old siberian husky named Bullet. Many of my colleagues discouraged me from getting an old dog, let alone an independent breed, saying it will be hard to bond with an old dog. I picked up this booked and so far, this is the best I’ve ever read on dog training. Bullet and I turned out to be so-bonded, that Bullet while he was a husky, made his way back to our house even when he was let lose off the park by his dog sitter. And Bullet had so mastered the come-when-called that even he was in the middle of packed dog park, he will look for me and at the the sound of my calling, he will come running right to me – no matter what the distractions are. every dog owner should read this book, if they so desire to be truly bonded with their dog.
